She had previously gained recognition by playing the 13-year-old American Lebanese girl Jasira Maroun as she goes through a series of turbulent personal struggles against set against the backdrop of the U.S. invasion of Iraq in the Gulf War in the Alan Ball film Towelhead. The following year she was voted one of Variety's Ten Actors To Watch. She was in 2009 when she portrayed the powerful Taslima in the film Crossing Over. She was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Lead in the film. Other film roles she has played include the film Moozlum The Last Airbender Pop Star, Under the Silver Lake, as well as several guest appearances on television.
